MACOAVELL JOURNAL · WALL FINISH GUIDE
Limewash usually creates a brushed, matt finish with soft colour variation. Texture paint covers a wider range of decorative effects, including subtle movement, polished surfaces and pronounced relief. The right choice depends on the exact product, wall condition and how you use the room.

A softly shaded wall in a renovation photograph could be limewash, matte plaster or another decorative coating. The colours may look similar on a phone, while the surface, sheen and care requirements differ. For a Malaysian home, it helps to compare the complete finish before deciding from a colour swatch.
Traditional limewash is a lime-based coating commonly applied with a brush to a suitably prepared surface. Tonal variation and the application pattern give it its character. A product described as a “limewash look” may use another formulation, so ask what the proposed coating actually is.
Texture paint is a broader description used for decorative coatings with different binders and effects. In decorative-finish marketing, lime-based plasters are often grouped alongside texture paints, although they are different types of coating. MacoAvell Vellplas, Vellma and Vellcco are decorative plaster or stucco options; they should not be assumed to be traditional brushed limewash.
A matt, softly varied appearance. Check the preparation, stain resistance and touch-up method for the specific product.
Cloudy movement created through trowel application. Compare the pattern scale and the final finishing treatment.
A trowel-applied, marble-like effect with a burnished sheen. Assess the reflections under the room’s lighting.
More noticeable relief and stone-inspired effects. Application may involve trowels or other tools depending on the pattern.
For a Japandi-inspired room with timber, linen and a restrained palette, compare limewash with a matte plaster sample. A quieter wall can work beside expressive stone or patterned fabrics. Stronger movement may suit a feature wall intended to hold the room’s attention.
In the MacoAvell collection, Vellplas Matte Marmorino offers a soft, cloudy, trowel-applied direction. It is an option to explore when you like tonal movement and want to consider plaster alongside brushed finishes.

If your reference images show reflected highlights, explore Vellma Fine Marmorino, MacoAvell’s polished direction. If you prefer stronger physical texture, Vellcco decorative stucco offers stone-inspired effects and more visible relief.
Stand where you will normally see the wall: beside the sofa, at the dining table or in the doorway. A dramatic close-up can feel very different across a large surface. Consider how the pattern relates to cabinetry, art and the amount of uninterrupted wall.

For a corridor, dining area or commercial seating zone, make cleaning part of the selection brief. Ask for the approved method to be demonstrated on a fully cured sample. Consider where chair backs, luggage or hands will touch the wall and whether furniture placement can reduce wear.
Care varies by system. For example, Bauwerk’s limewash guidance recommends gentle wiping and cautions against scrubbing or using soap. Do not assume every decorative surface behaves like washable emulsion.
For MacoAvell, follow the care guidance for the installed finish, including any wax or protective treatment. Ask about repairing visible marks as well as routine cleaning.
A decorative coating does not fix a damp wall. Investigate moisture before finishing and confirm suitability for the location. MacoAvell does not describe Vellma, Vellplas or Vellcco as waterproof, and its guidance does not recommend direct shower exposure. Finishing wax is not a substitute for a waterproofing system.
For a powder room or wall near a basin, show the supplier the actual splash zones and ventilation arrangements. In cooking areas, explain possible grease exposure. These conditions matter more than choosing a finish solely because it looks suitable in a photograph.
Ask for limewash and texture-paint quotations against the same measured wall area. A tub price does not establish the installed cost. Compare preparation, primer, decorative coats, any finishing treatment, labour, access and protection of adjacent surfaces.
Confirm whether wall repairs are included and whether a minimum job charge applies. On larger projects, agree who will approve the sample and coordinate the finish with cabinetry and lighting work. A clear scope makes quotations more useful than an unsupported price-per-square-foot comparison.
Before work begins, review a representative sample beside the actual flooring, cabinet finish and fabrics. Check it in daylight and under the planned evening lights. Record:
Architects, interior designers and contractors should keep the agreed sample available through installation and handover. Request the applicable technical and care documents for the selected system.
No. Limewash is generally brushed, while Venetian-style plaster is trowel-applied and may be burnished. Both can contain lime while producing different surfaces.
Yes. The term can describe visual movement as well as physical relief. Compare a cloudy matte finish with a more pronounced stucco texture.
There is no reliable category-wide answer. Compare the exact coating, finishing treatment, room use and approved cleaning and repair methods.
Share your inspiration image, project location and approximate wall area with MacoAvell. Explore Vellplas for a matte cloudy direction, Vellma for a polished effect or Vellcco for stronger texture. Request a physical sample before selecting the finish for your space.
