Low VOC Texture Paint in Malaysia: What Specifiers Should Check

When specifying low-VOC texture paint in Malaysia, ask for evidence that matches the exact product and the project’s requirements. Check whether the claim concerns VOC content, emissions after application, or both. Review the primer and finishing treatment alongside the decorative layer, and keep the accepted documents with the material submission.

This approach helps architects, interior designers and main contractors turn an environmental preference into a clear purchasing decision. It is useful when a hotel, office or residential development has an indoor-air-quality brief, a building-rating target or a client request for lower-emitting materials.

Understand what the claim measures

VOC stands for volatile organic compound. For coatings, two terms need separating: VOC content concerns the amount in the formulation under a stated measurement method; VOC emissions concern what the material releases under specified test conditions. A content figure is not itself an emissions test result.

Green Seal’s VOC guide explains that it addresses content and emissions separately when assessing paints and coatings. Its guidance also highlights colourants. Ask whether the evidence covers the supplied colour or tinting system, rather than assuming a result for a base product answers every question.

Start with the project requirement

Before requesting certificates, establish what the project actually needs. Is the brief asking for a declared VOC-content limit, a recognised emissions assessment, an ecolabel, or evidence for a particular building-rating credit? State the requirement in the enquiry so suppliers can respond to the same question.

For a Malaysian project pursuing Green Building Index assessment, involve the project’s GBI Facilitator early. Have the team confirm the applicable tool, version, coating category and submission route before selecting a limit. Consult the GBI guidance alongside the project requirements.

Avoid copying a number from an unrelated paint specification. A decorative plaster, primer and protective treatment may need separate classification. Resolve this with the project’s assessor and supplier before procurement.

Read each document for its purpose

A useful submission brings together several kinds of evidence:

  • Technical data sheet: product use, compatible preparation and application information.
  • Safety data sheet: hazards, handling, storage and exposure-control information.
  • VOC declaration or test report: the stated result, method, units and product identification.
  • Emissions certificate or report, where required: the assessed product, test basis and scope of the claim.

A safety data sheet should not be treated as an indoor-emissions certificate. Check that every document names the proposed product and has a clear date or revision. Where a certificate is offered, verify its scope and current status with the issuer. A certificate for another product or a different formulation does not settle the proposed submission.

Check the current MacoAvell product information

Vellplas Matte Marmorino provides a soft, cloudy matte direction, while Vellcco Decorative Stucco offers more pronounced relief and stone-inspired effects. Use these pages to shortlist the appearance, then request the documentation needed for your project.

MacoAvell’s product information describes low-VOC formulations and invites requests for supporting evidence. This article does not assert a numerical VOC value, emissions certification or building-rating eligibility for a MacoAvell product. If the required evidence has not been supplied, keep that part of the review open.

Obtain current approved instructions through MacoAvell’s resources and product documents before issuing the application specification.

Include every proposed layer

List the substrate preparation, primer or basecoat, decorative material and any wax or sealer in one finish schedule. Ask which evidence applies to each component and whether a report covers an individual material or a tested combination.

For example, an office reception may have an approved plaster colour while the final protective treatment remains undecided. Close that decision before accepting the complete finish submission. A later change of primer, colourant or finishing treatment should trigger a review of the affected documents and sample.

Keep appearance approval and documentary acceptance visible as separate decisions. A sample can demonstrate colour, relief and sheen; it cannot demonstrate a VOC result. MacoAvell’s architectural wall-finish specification guide explains how to coordinate the complete finish system.

Coordinate installation and handover

Material selection is one part of managing a refurbishment. Follow the product instructions and arrange suitable ventilation during and after application. For a hotel or office that remains partly occupied, agree the working area, ventilation arrangements and return-to-use criteria with the responsible project team.

Do not turn a touch-dry time into an automatic occupancy approval. Low odour is not proof that emissions have ended. Follow the approved product and project guidance rather than applying a universal waiting period.

At handover, retain the accepted product references, document revisions, finishing treatment and care instructions. Record substitutions and their approval so the facilities team knows what was actually installed.

Frequently asked questions

Does low VOC mean zero emissions?

No. A VOC-content claim and an emissions assessment answer different questions. Check the stated method and scope rather than treating “low”, “zero” and “low-emitting” as interchangeable.

Does a low-VOC finish automatically earn GBI points?

Do not assume so. The project team must establish the applicable criteria and accepted evidence. A general product description does not confirm a building-rating outcome.

Does a mineral or lime-based description prove compliance?

No. A material description does not replace the evidence required by the project. Review the exact product and proposed system without treating all decorative finishes as interchangeable.

What should accompany a specification enquiry?

Send the project location, room use, approximate wall area in sq ft, preferred finish and exact documentation requirement. Request a sample and discuss your project, or WhatsApp MacoAvell on +60 12-484 7030.
